How to release your Piriformis Muscle


The piriformis muscle is among the most irritable muscles in the entire human body! It is attached to the sacrum and outside of the hip area. These muscles serve the purpose of turning your leg. One major issue is that the sciatic nerve runs directly under this muscle which is why if the piriformis muscle is a little tighter, it can develop a pinching sensation.



When the piriformis muscle is irritated, it also affects the sciatic nerve leading to pain around the hips









Release your piriformis muscle

There is quite a high chance of a piriformis muscle getting tensed over and over again. In case something like this happens to you, just follow any of the methods mentioned below:


  • Stretch your piriformis

The first way is to stretch your piriformis muscle. You can do so by lying on your back and bending your right knee in a way that points towards your left shoulder. Move your hands towards it and bring the knee closer to your chest. This stretching is a great way of loosening a tightened piriformis muscle. Restorative yoga is also very therapeutic for the piriformis muscle


  • Use a tennis ball

You can also release your piriformis muscle by placing a tennis ball under it. This will help in loosening the knots inside your muscles and will help in relax the glutes and piriformis muscles


  • Use a foam roller

A foam roller is also very helpful for the release of piriformis muscles. In case you need to loosen the piriformis muscle of the right side of your body, you need to lay on your ride side and place your right elbow on the floor or mat. This will help you in stabilizing the upper portion of your body. Now place a foam roller on the backside of your right hip, exactly under your piriformis. Slightly roll back and forth and you will feel the tension releasing from your muscles


  • Treat other issues

There are many minor issues with our body that can increase the chances of piriformis muscle tightening.

For example, overpronation of the foot and leg-length discrepancies are the sorts of issues that may lead to problems in piriformis muscles. Pay attention to those issues and get rid of them as soon as possible in order to save yourself from the pain of piriformis muscle tightening.
